What is Cyber Essentials?
Cyber Essentials is a simple but effective Government-backed and industry-supported scheme devised by the National Cyber Security Centre, designed to help organisations of any size protect themselves against a range of the most common cyber attacks.
Having Cyber Essentials certification demonstrates an organisation’s commitment to the importance of their online security. The scheme is backed by industry, including the Federation of Small Businesses, the CBI and a number of insurance organisations, which are offering incentives for businesses.
Why is cyber security essential?
According to the National Cyber Security Centre, cyber attacks come in many shapes and sizes, the vast majority being very basic in nature and carried out by relatively unskilled individuals. They are the digital equivalent of a thief trying your front door to see if it’s unlocked. The advice inherent in the Cyber Essentials scheme is designed to prevent these attacks.
Cyber Essentials gives organisations protection against a wide variety of the most common cyber attacks, important because vulnerability to simple attacks can mark an organisation out as target for more in-depth unwanted attention from cyber criminals and others.
Certification brings peace of mind that an organisation’s online defences will protect against the vast majority of common cyber attacks simply because these attacks are looking for targets which do not have the Cyber Essentials technical controls in place. Cyber Essentials shows how to address those basics and prevent the most common attacks.
