PRINCE2 is the result of many years of continuous upgrade to PRINCE, a UK government standard used for IT project management. It stands for PRojects IN Controlled Environments and has developed into a universal methodology that is widely recognised around the world and seen as project management best practice.

PRINCE2 methodology follows a set of 7 Principles, 7 Themes and 7 Processes to assure a project remains viable throughout its lifecycle.

Why use PRINCE2?

There are many benefits to using PRINCE2, but standardisation is by far the largest. This means that your project team are working within a defined framework and with a specific strategy and approach. There is common and familiar language and documents, with clearly developed processes and systems to assure that everyone is on the same page.

What are the other benefits?

Because of the way PRINCE2 operates, it aims to give all projects the highest probability for success. It does this by allowing for proper planning by front loading project management effort at the start of the project to assure that there is sufficient business justification for the project.

More simply put, there is a lot of effort before the project gains approval to assure that it’s viable. This is greatly beneficial for businesses because it allows for minimal resources to be dedicated to the project in the first stage, saving money. Most importantly, it allows businesses to make a thoroughly informed decision to either move forward with the project or not.

Applying PRINCE2 to smaller projects

Your project or business size has no bearing on whether you can use PRINCE2 methodology for your project. Its generic nature and tailored approach makes it flexible, so that you can make it fit for even smaller scale projects. ‘Tailoring’ is even one of the 7 Principles of PRINCE2.
